The French do not do enough sport and are aware of it. According to an OpinionWay survey carried out for the CIC and relayed by Le Parisien, only 59% of French people practice a sporting activity on a weekly basis. 17% even say they never do sports.
The figures legitimize the “Move 30 minutes a day” campaign launched by the government, which has made physical and sporting activity a major national cause in 2024. A pivotal sporting year, with the organization of the Olympic Games this summer (26 July-August 11). “I invite you all to do at least thirty minutes of sport a day, more if you can, but at least thirty minutes a day because it is good for your health and for many things,” declared Emmanuel Macron on the social networks on January 8.
Problem is, only 22% of the population says they are aware of this recommendation. And the thirty minutes a day recommended by the President of the Republic are not there. Still according to the barometer, 50% of French people do less than thirty minutes of sport per day.
Apart from the head of state's encouraging videos, what could motivate the general public to move more? 20% of the population mentions “financial assistance to equip themselves, acquire a license, a subscription”, and 19% of those questioned would like to have “access to more freely available sports equipment”.
