Football: in Madrid, a “Mbappé law” will allow tax relief for foreigners

Kylian Mbappé is still not a Real Madrid player, but the local political world is preparing for it. According to the Catalan media Mundo Deportivo and El Nacional, a “Mbappé law” led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the community of Madrid, will see the light of day this week. It must be voted on in the Madrid Assembly on Wednesday.

This law will consist of an abolition of regional income tax for foreigners who settle in Madrid and “who make significant investments”, reports El Nacional. This new legislation is reminiscent of the “Beckham Law”, enacted in 2005, two years after the famous English footballer David Beckham joined Real Madrid. It also allowed foreign workers to benefit from a favorable tax regime.

Thus, Kylian Mbappé, if he leaves PSG for Real this summer as has been expected for several months, could only pay national tax, of around 24.5% for those receiving more than 300,000 euros gross per year. He will obviously not be the only person who can benefit from the law. Almost all foreign players from Real Madrid, but also from Atlético de Madrid for example, receive an annual salary of more than 300,000 euros.

El Nacional specifies that the law was already in the pipeline last year, even if the name of the captain of the France team was not yet attached to it. The presence in the Madrid Assembly of Vox, a far-right party, then hindered its promulgation. From now on, the Popular Party (PP), of which Isabel Díaz Ayuso is a member, has an absolute majority in the Madrid Assembly.
