Football: Gianni Infantino denounces “unacceptable events” in Türkiye

Fifa President Gianni Infantino on Tuesday described the lynching of a referee during a Turkish championship match on Monday as “unacceptable”.

“There is absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field,” the manager wrote in a statement. “The events following the Turkish Super Lig match between MKE Ankaragücü and Caykur Rizespor are completely unacceptable and have no place in our sport or society.”

“Without referees, there is no football. Referees, players, supporters and staff must be safe to enjoy the match and I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is strictly respected at all levels,” added the president of the International Football Federation.

A referee of a match in the Turkish first division championship was severely beaten on Monday by several men, including the president of the Ankaragücü club, after the match between Ankaragücü and Rizespor. This serious incident has caused the suspension of the championship until further notice.
