Football: Fans who did not see Messi in Hong Kong will have their tickets refunded at 50%

Fans of Lionel Messi, who were unable to see their idol play, injured and remaining on the bench, during an exhibition match in Hong Kong, will be able to be reimbursed at 50%, provided that they give up in any pursuit, the organizer of the event announced on Monday.

Lionel Messi and his American club Inter Miami provoked the anger of spectators when the Argentinian remained on the bench on February 4 during a match against a local selection of players playing in Hong Kong. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had cited an injury. Spectators had paid up to 4,800 Hong Kong dollars (570 euros) to attend the match and many had expressed their dissatisfaction with the absence of the player, but especially with his attitude, because he had not addressed the public to excuse.

The player even had to explain himself immediately, to ensure in particular that his absence on the field was not due to “political reasons” and to recall his “very good and very close” relations with China. Hong Kong authorities have been regularly in the crosshairs of the United States and the United Kingdom since the implementation in the semi-autonomous territory of a national security law which helped to muzzle political opposition.

The organizer of this meeting, Tatler Asia, finally announced on Monday that holders of tickets “purchased through official channels” for this meeting could be reimbursed up to 50%, provided in particular that they waive any prosecution “before a court of law, tribunal or regulatory authorities”.
