Europa League: Jonathan Clauss forfeits for OM-Benfica

His return was hoped for, but it will be too tight. Jonathan Clauss has still not recovered from a torn hamstring in his left thigh that occurred on March 26, during a friendly match for the France team against Chile (3-2). The coach of Olympique de Marseille, Jean-Louis Gasset, announced his withdrawal this Wednesday at a press conference for the quarter-final second leg of the Europa League against Benfica.

“Clauss will train this Wednesday but I’m not going to take any risks,” Gasset said. Clauss, 31 years old and well on his way to playing Euro 2024 with the Blues, is a key element for OM this season. His replacement, Amir Murillo, injured for more than a month, “was in the group in Lisbon and is getting better and better”, underlined Gasset. The Phocaeans will also have to cope without Senegalese winger Ismaïla Sarr, who suffered a muscular injury. Unsurprisingly, left back Quentin Merlin is also out after spraining his ankle last week.

OM lost the first leg (2-1) and hosts Benfica at the Vélodrome this Thursday (9 p.m.). 9th in Ligue 1 with five points behind the top 5 and ten points behind the top 4, the Olympian club hopes to save its season with an advanced run in the Europa League.
