This is the highest distinction rewarding “the eminent merits acquired in the name of the Nation either in a civilian capacity or under arms”.

In this 2024 class there are eleven personalities from the sporting world, whose names were proposed by the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Among them, two reached the rank of officer: Marie-Claude Feydeau, former president of the French parachute federation, and Michel Vion, former high-level skier, secretary general of an international sports organization.

Nine others were elevated to the rank of knights. They include Frederik Michalak, who wore the colors of the French XV, Marion Bartoli, former tennis player who won the prestigious Wimbledon tournament in 2013, and Roxana Maracineanu, former minister of sports.
