Tesla unveils Optimus Gen 2, the latest version of its humanoid robot

How far will the humanoid robot developed by Tesla go? On Wednesday, Elon Musk's automobile firm unveiled the latest version of its Optimus robot, renamed Optimus Gen 2. As its name suggests, this is the second generation of the bipedal robot whose prototype was presented in September 2022 by Tesla. “There’s a new robot in town,” the company mischievously announced on the X network (formerly Twitter). The video attached to the post shows the humanoid's latest feats: "squat", dance steps... The robot's progress is impressive.

To be able to perform these demanding movements, the robot had to go through the diet box: Optimus Gen 2 lost 10 kg compared to its previous version, presented in the spring by Tesla. The new robot also benefits from improved balance management and better control of the entire body, which has given it a speed gain of around 30%, the video indicates.

The humanoid now has articulated toes and a more flexible neck. Thanks to its improved design, which almost completely conceals its mechanical joints, it is clear that Optimus looks more and more like a man. Even more than dance and fitness movements, the robot's most notable progress remains its ability to hold an egg in its hands without crushing it. This feat was made possible by the addition of touch detection sensors on each finger, the purpose of which is to help the humanoid control its strength. These technological jewels are also produced by the automobile giant.

This high-performance robot will certainly fascinate science fiction fans... But, according to Elon Musk himself, the development of these technological creatures is not to be taken lightly. The businessman continues to alert the general public to the risks posed by “humanoid robots” for humankind. “We should be very concerned about humanoid robots that can follow us anywhere [...]. What happens if a robot receives a software update and it's no longer as friendly? questioned the owner of SpaceX and Tesla on the sidelines of the first world summit on AI last November. Worryingly, the technology billionaire then stressed the importance of having a physical switch available to be able to stop the humanoid in the event of a slip...
