“I didn’t want to do it”, Donald Trump denies having imposed himself in Mom, I missed the plane again

In Chris Columbus' film, Mom, I Missed the Plane Again, first broadcast on the big screen on October 16, 1992, the scene between Macaulay Culkin and the 45th President of the United States will remain one of the most cult of this Christmas comedy.

In the second part of the McCallister family's Christmas adventures, little Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, reserves a room at the Plaza Hotel in New York using his father's credit card that he had borrowed to buy Battery. It is in the lobby of the palace that the hero meets Donald Trump and asks him where the lobby is.

In a 2020 interview with Business Insider, director Chris Columbus claimed that they paid a filming fee at the Plaza Hotel, but that Donald Trump, who owned it at the time, insisted for him to make a cameo. According to the director, Trump told him while filming the movie, “You can only use the Plaza if I’m in the movie.”

On Wednesday, December 27, Trump reacted to these revelations, a little more than 30 years after the film's release. “Director Chris Columbus and others were begging me to appear in Home Alone 2. They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was very busy and didn't want to do it. They were very nice, but above all persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history!” Regarding the director's claims? “Nothing could be further from the truth,” he added on Truth.

Still in his interview with Business Insider, the filmmaker admitted that this scene contributed to the success of this feature film. “When we first showed the film, a strange thing happened: People applauded when Trump appeared on screen. So I told my chief editor, “Leave him in the movie. It's a good moment for the public.'" And it's not the American billionaire who will say the opposite: "This little appearance took off like a rocket and the film was a great success, and still is, especially as Christmas approaches. People call me every time it’s on.”

“If they felt intimidated or didn't want me, why did they put me there and keep me there for over 30 years? Because I was, and still am, a great argument for the film. That’s why,” the former US president concluded.
