Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Winter Break

Thanks to her performance as a bereaved mother in the bittersweet Christmas comedy Winter Break, the 37-year-old African-American actress beats Emily Blunt in Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks in The Color Purple, America Ferrera in Barbie, Jodie Foster in Unsinkable.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph's victory was little in doubt. She had won all the precursor awards: SAG awards, Golden Globe, Bafta.

“God is so good. I didn't think acting would be my career. I started as a singer. I thank my mother for pushing me to cross the street.” “For a long time, I wanted to be different, I understand today where you have to be yourself,” said the winner. “I think of the little girl I was, who didn’t feel seen, who was the only little black girl in her class, of my teacher who told me you’re going to make it.”

The actress was only revealed to the general public in 2019 thanks to her role as Lady Reed in Dolemite Is My Name with Eddie Murphy. Selected for the NAACP Image Awards, she will receive the award for Best Supporting Actress.
