The arrival of international tourists to Spain is growing and they already spend more than before the pandemic

Spain received close to 37.5 million international tourists in the first half of 2023, 23.7% more than in the same period of 2022, and their spending reached 46,011 million euros, 28.3% more. The arrival of international tourists to Spain has not yet recovered the pre-pandemic data, since the total figure is still 1.6% below those of 2019, although spending is already 14.3% higher than then, according to surveys published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on tourist receipts (Frontur) and associated spending (Egatur), benchmark statistics for the Spanish tourism sector.

In June, the total expenditure made by international tourists who visited Spain reached 10,606 million euros, which represents an increase of 17.5% compared to the same month in 2022 and 9.5% more than in 2019.

International traveler spending continues to mark monthly record highs since November. The growth in spending is the result of the higher average daily disbursement per tourist: from 155 euros in June 2019 to 188 euros at the end of last June, 21.3% more.

The main source countries in the first six months of 2023 were the United Kingdom (with close to 7.8 million tourists and an annual increase of 19.8%), France (almost 4.9 million and an increase of 23.3% ) and Germany (with almost 4.9 million, 10.8% more). Among the large emitters, only France improves the arrival figures compared to the pre-pandemic values and there are 530,000 British and 480,000 fewer Germans to reach the numbers of June 2019. Regarding the Germans, although the arrival increases by 10%, the half that of other large emitters of international tourism.

Among the large recipients of tourists, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community are above the figures before the pandemic. Those values do not reach Catalonia (the furthest away, with close to a million fewer tickets), Madrid and Andalusia, which register 160,000 and 100,000 fewer, respectively.

The autonomous communities that received the most tourists were Catalonia (with 7.9 million and an increase of 30.5% compared to the same period in 2022), the Canary Islands (with 6.8 million and an increase of 18.5%) and the Balearic Islands ( with 5.7 million, 9.8% more).

Regarding spending, those who left the most money during their visit to Spain were the British (8,294 million), followed by the Germans (5,682 million), ahead of the French (3,630 million). In the first six months of 2023, the United Kingdom was the country with the highest cumulative spending (18% of the total). It was followed by Germany (12.3%) and France (7.9%).
