War in Ukraine: 76% of French people against sending French troops on the ground

Disapproved by the political class, the words of the President of the Republic also seem rejected by a clear majority of the French population.

The sending of Western troops cannot “be excluded,” Emmanuel Macron said on Monday on the sidelines of an international conference which brought together 21 heads of state at the Élysée. The French president, who responded to a journalist's question, nevertheless considered that there was "no consensus" at this stage for this hypothesis, and assumed a "strategic ambiguity" on this subject.

According to a CSA poll for Europe 1, CNews and JDD, 76% of French people are against sending French troops to Ukraine. This very large majority is rather homogeneous in terms of gender (77% men, 75% women), age or socio-professional category, according to the opinion survey. Those aged 50-64 are nevertheless the most reluctant (85%) to sending French soldiers, while those aged 18-24 are opposed to it at 68%, still very largely therefore.

This solution mentioned - but not confirmed - by the French head of state met with stronger opposition on the right, garnering 81% against. In detail, 84% of RN voters and 76% of LR voters expressed their disagreement. On the left, 67% of supporters of France Insoumise, 78% of those close to Europe Ecologie-Les Verts and 65% of PS supporters firmly oppose this measure. As for the voters of Renaissance, and therefore of the president, there is still a large majority of 68% to oppose it.

Emmanuel Macron's remarks were not met with enthusiasm in Europe, and even a frank disavowal from most of the Twenty-Seven of the European Union. In France, the president was strongly criticized by all oppositions.
