A common argument in the free speech debate goes something like this: someone is complaining about a lack of free speech, but doing so publicly and loudly on Twitter or even on a talk show. This is a clear contradiction and only shows that in reality there is no reason to worry about freedom of expression.
As plausible as this argument may appear at first glance, it is based on a greatly reduced understanding of freedom of expression.
From the perspective of the social sciences, the degree of freedom of opinion is measured by the extent to which it is sanctioned or, to put it another way: by the costs associated with freedom of expression.
