Former US President Jimmy Carter has entered home hospice care after several short hospitalizations. The Carter Foundation, founded by the former president, announced this on its website on Saturday.

Accordingly, the 98-year-old decided not to seek any further medical treatment. Instead, he wants to spend the rest of his time at home with his family. He lives with his wife Rosalynn (95) in Plains, Georgia, where she was born.

Carter is the oldest living former US President. The Democrat was the 39th President of the United States from January 1977 to January 1981. He served only one term. His successor was Ronald Reagan. In 1982, Carter founded his non-governmental organization, the Carter Center, which works, among other things, for peaceful conflict resolution around the world. In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Jason Carter, the couple's grandson, who now chairs the Carter Center's board of directors, said in a tweet Saturday that he had seen his grandparents just a day earlier. "They are happy and - as always - their home is full of love."
