Iran's attack on Israel: missiles intercepted above the Knesset and the Dome of the Rock, holiest site of Islam

Iran carried out an unprecedented “vast” attack against Israel overnight from Saturday to Sunday. More than 300 drones and missiles against Israeli territory were fired, almost two weeks after a raid on the Iranian consulate in Damascus blamed on Israel, raising fears of an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday morning, a series of detonations froze the city. The sky was punctuated with red and yellow lights filmed by many residents who shared the images on social networks.

Striking images of projectiles grazing the emblematic golden dome of the Dome of the Rock, on one of the holiest sites in Islam, in the heart of the old city, are making the rounds on the Internet. Others show projectiles intercepted above the al-Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, and the Knesset (the Israeli parliament).

“We are entering into a direct Iran/Israel confrontation. This is unprecedented,” comments a correspondent on site in Jerusalem.

“In the Old City of Jerusalem, sirens and explosion- - Iron Dome in action. The residents are running for shelter,” testifies another French correspondent.

Many Internet users also shared this image during the night, specifying that the lights in the sky were the “interceptors” of the drones.

An Internet user published a video showing the sky, above the al-Aqsa mosque, where drones appear to be intercepted while warning sirens sound.

Another journalist shared, during the night, images that he said were “filmed in the vicinity of Gaza”, showing “interceptions in the distance, in the vicinity of the Israeli Negev”.
