The memorial was created on 18 October 2017, two days after the murder of the journalist, who died in the explosion of a car bomb put in his car, outside his house in Bidnija. People had started to bring candles, flowers, souvenirs and other gifts, at the foot of the monument of the Great Siege. Since then, a team of volunteers has started to take care of its maintenance, and to keep the flowers always fresh. It's always been a struggle. The one that was fixed of the day, the night disappeared. Employees in the maintenance state they had precise instructions, as told to the activists, the former minister of Justice Owen Bonnici. the Robert Abela , shortly after becoming prime minister in mid-January, has announced that the memorial would never have been touched.
