The heavy fall suffered during the last Strade Bianche caused damage. In an interview with Le Parisien, Julian Alaphilippe revealed that he had run the Flandriennes with a fracture of the head of the left fibula. “I felt like something was really wrong. With the medical team, we decided to do examinations. And they showed that I had a fracture of the head of the fibula. It was like a big embarrassment more than something unbearable. The doctors told me that before the Flandrian classics, it was up to me to make the decision.”
The French rider then explained that he regretted this decision. “The head wanted to decide instead of the knee,” he justified in the columns of the general daily. He also explained why he kept the injury a secret: “I didn't want to say it because I didn't want people to think I was making excuses. I'm tired of going through the hassles and fighting against them instead of simply devoting myself to finding my true level.”
