Premier League: Erik Ten Hag speaks of “case closed” regarding Rashford

Coach Erik ten Hag said on Wednesday that the disciplinary problems of his striker Marcus Rashford were a “closed case”, refusing to say more on the eve of a trip to Wolverhampton on Thursday in the Premier League.

“He took responsibility and the rest is an internal matter. Case closed,” replied the Dutchman at a press conference. “Case closed,” he repeated after being raised on the subject. The 26-year-old striker, criticized for his insufficient performance this season (4 goals in 26 matches) was not present on Sunday for the fourth round of the FA Cup against the Welsh of Newport (D4), but the circumstances of his absence appeared quite vague.

Ten Hag first assured Friday that Rashford was “sick”. However, press articles relayed the presence of the England international in a nightclub on Thursday evening in Belfast, then his absence the next day at training. The striker had already found himself under fire after being spotted in a nightclub hours after a 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford on October 29. “It’s unacceptable, I told him, he apologized and that’s it,” Ten Hag reacted.

The former Ajax Amsterdam coach noted that there was “not a good culture” when he arrived in 2022 on the Red Devils bench. He has had to deal with several delicate disciplinary situations since then, notably with English winger Jadon Sancho, excluded from the professional squad for four months before being loaned to Borussia Dortmund in January until the end of the season.
