Nantes supporter deceased: VTC driver in police custody

The evening had everything to be beautiful in Nantes. Under the leadership of their new coach Jocelyn Gourvennec, the Canaries won their first victory in Ligue 1 since the end of October against OGC Nice (1-0). But a tragedy that occurred before kick-off near the Beaujoire stadium put football in the background.

A Nantes supporter was fatally injured with a knife by a VTC driver. If the investigation “must now specify the exact circumstances of the facts” as Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra indicated on X (ex-Twitter), certain information is known. “Shortly before 8 p.m., several VTC vehicles transporting Nice supporters were attacked by supporters of FC Nantes while they were traveling on avenue de la gare de Saint Joseph, in order to go to the Beaujoire stadium,” describes the Nantes public prosecutor in a press release published at 12:30 a.m. to formalize the death. During these events, the victim, a 31-year-old ultra and member of the Loire Brigade, the main group of Nantes supporters, “collapsed” in front of Saint-Georges, a bar located near the stadium.

Still according to Renaud Gaudeul, the prosecutor, the man "died on the spot" from a "wound in the back, possibly consistent with a bladed weapon", despite cardiac massage and the intervention of emergency services. Other sources indicate that the supporter was transported to the university hospital in cardiac arrest. As for the VTC driver, he first fled before going to the police station in the evening. He was taken into custody.

“As a continuation of the first investigations carried out during the night, a VTC driver went to the Nantes police headquarters this (Sunday) morning, at 4:30 a.m., and was placed in police custody of the chief in particular of intentional homicide”, indicates in a press release the public prosecutor of Nantes, Renaud Gaudeul.

“It is a 35-year-old man,” specifies the prosecutor, who at this stage does not plan a press briefing before Monday.

Still in shock and waiting for news, many supporters of the Loire Brigade had decided not to enter the stadium and not to animate their stands. At 9:11 p.m., or 11 minutes after kick-off, FC Nantes communicated on the family as well as those close to the victim. In a new press release published at 1:14 a.m., the club this time expressed its “pain to learn that a Nantes supporter was fatally injured” and “its most sincere condolences”.

The prosecution opened an investigation for “intentional homicide”, entrusted jointly to the territorial direction of the judicial police and the Loire-Atlantique Departmental Security. “Numerous witness hearings are underway this evening and will continue into the night,” underlines Renaud Gaudeul.
