MotoGP: RNF team excluded from grid in 2024 for repeated infractions

The RNF team, Aprilia's satellite formation this season in MotoGP, has been excluded from the field for the 2024 season, the championship organizers informed on Monday.

“The MotoGP selection committee (...) has decided not to select CryptoDATA RNF for the 2024 season. Repeated infringements and violations of the participation agreement affecting the public image of MotoGP have made this decision necessary” , indicates their press release published Monday, the day after the last race of the 2023 season.

On Saturday, the RNF team denied rumors of financial difficulties and possible withdrawal, then on Monday morning it announced a partnership with a new sponsor.

But the decision of the authorities seems final since they announce in the press release that “the selection committee (of MotoGP) will study the applications to choose a new independent team which will join the grid of the MotoGP category in 2024 and will use Aprilia motorcycles. »

While waiting for this choice, the future of the two drivers who played for RNF this season, the Portuguese Miguel Oliveira, currently injured, and the Spaniard Raul Fernandez, remains unclear. The latter's participation in the end-of-season tests on Tuesday in Valencia is no longer guaranteed.

The RNF team, founded by Malaysian Razlan Razali with the support of the oil group Petronas, arrived in the premier category in 2019 under the name Sepang Racing Team.

After losing financial support from Petronas in 2022, Razali had taken over the team and renamed it RNF. The Romanian company CryptoDATA then became a majority shareholder, buying 60% of the capital at the end of 2022.

At the start of the weekend in Valencia, Razali announced his departure from RNF on his social networks.

The team, affiliated with Yamaha until 2022, notably welcomed Fabio Quartararo during his first two seasons in MotoGP in 2019 and 2020. The Frenchman joined the official Yamaha team the following year, with whom he was crowned world champion.

Italian MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi also ended his rich career with the Malaysian team in 2021.
