Galaxy S24: Samsung's new top-of-the-range bet everything on artificial intelligence

Until recently, going to the presentation of a mobile phone basically meant hearing about how powerful its cameras or processor were. But this has changed and Samsung has been one of the first companies to show us what smartphones will be like from now on.

The RAM, the battery or the number of lenses that the new Galaxy S24 have take a back seat, displaced by everything that the company's three new phones can do thanks to artificial intelligence.

'Galaxy AI has arrived' is the leitmotif that is repeated everywhere, even displacing the names of the terminals, Galaxy S24, S24 Ultra and S24 Plus. "This range transforms our connection to the world and ushers in a new decade of mobile innovation," said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

As we have been sold all these years, mobile phones are there to make our lives easier. Well, now the AI wants to make this goal make even more sense with functions that go beyond improving a photo, making you always look good.

Samsung has focused a good part of its efforts with AI on translation, solving some very common problems and also doing it quite decently. A first example of this is the simultaneous translation in telephone calls, which has been called Live Translate. We tested a call with a Korean restaurant and the machine is capable of translating from Spanish to Korean and vice versa instantly, allowing for a more or less fluid call. This option currently works only on the new Galaxy S24 and before the call you have to set the language you want to translate to, but you can call any phone, whether or not it is a top-of-the-range Samsung phone.

Continuing with the translations, AI also allows the new S24 to function as conversation interpreters in applications such as WhatsApp or other social networks through Chat Assist. Furthermore, in this case it is possible to ask the assistant to write in different tones, for example a more formal tone if it is a WhatsApp with a client or a more friendly or jovial tone if it is a friend. The phone will instantly translate what has been written, both by one speaker and another, making conversations in other languages much easier.

The transcription assistant is also very practical, capable of transcribing the audio of, for example, a meeting in a matter of seconds, identifying the different participants, translating it into the desired language and, if necessary, summarizing it by topic.

In the camera, the ProVisual Engine function incorporates an extensive package of AI tools in the S24. Some functions such as the possibility of eliminating objects or people were already in previous models, but in the S24 it is improved and a new function is also added that allows the photo to be rotated and the phone itself to invent and create the information that is needed to complete the sides without barely noticing that it is not real.

Another good tool is Edit Suggestion, which uses Galaxy AI to suggest the ideal touch-ups for each photo. And to differentiate which images are real and which are retouched, when the Galaxy S24 series uses generative AI to modify an image, a watermark will appear on the image and metadata.

The Korean company has also teamed up with Google to use some of the new functions that the search giant is working on in the new Galaxy S24.

Specifically, they have announced an alliance "that will last for years" thanks to which Samsung will be the first partner to implement both Gemini Pro and Image 2 in Vertex AI on its phones through the cloud. Additionally, the new Galaxy S24 Series will use Gemini, Google's AI model.

One of the most striking AI applications in Samsung supported by Google is 'Circle to search', which, as its name indicates, allows the user to make a circle (or underline or make several lines as in the photo) around the object that you want to search for to find out on the Internet where to find it. Ideal for a specific monument or simply for a piece of clothing that you want to find.

Another feature of the S24 thanks to Google is Magic Compose, which runs within the device using Gemini Nano and allows you to create messages in different styles or tones, whether formal, enthusiastic or more literal.

Likewise, in the car, Android Auto will automatically summarize long texts or group chats while driving and suggest responses and actions without touching the phone.

Beyond AI, Samsung is betting on three super high-end terminals, especially the Ultra model, which works with the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, making it clear which is the best equipped device. Likewise, it is also the S24 Ultra that has the most changes in the photographic section, boasting a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor that will replace the 10-megapixel sensor of the S23 Ultra, and that improves the quality of images captured between 5 and 10x magnification. and night feedings.

In design, the new Galaxy S24 do not offer too many changes, but the S24 and S24 Plus models slightly increase the panel by one inch each and the Ultra model sports a new titanium structure that provides more robustness to the device.

As rumored, prices in Europe for the new Galaxy S24 drop compared to last year between approximately 50 and 70 euros, depending on the model and especially on the S24 and S24.

The 128Gb Samsung Galaxy S24 will be on sale for 909 euros while the 256Gb model will be on sale for 969 euros (959 and 1,019 euros respectively in the case of the S23).

In the case of the S24 Plus, the 256 GB model will be on sale for 1,159 euros and the 512 model, for 1,279 (1,209 and 1,329 euros for the S23 models from a year ago)

The new Galaxy S24 Ultra hit the market for 1,479 euros for the 256 Gb model, 1,579 euros for the 512 Gb model and the most expensive of all, 1,819 euros in the case of 1 Tb capacity (Last year, the S23 Ultra in These capacities came out to 1,409, 1,589, and 1,829 euros).

All models will be available from January 30.

Samsung begins the year with its new flagships with almost 12 months of uncertainty ahead in the mobile phone market, with predictions that point to the slight recovery of a sector that has accumulated months and months of declines.

Despite this, the Korean company has managed to remain globally as the company that sells the most terminals, a highly disputed leadership with Apple, and with the new Galaxy S24 and its renewed commitment to artificial intelligence it will seek to maintain that first place and shore up sales. of its high-end against powerful competitors such as Apple and even Xiaomi.
