“This postponement, beyond the constraints and hazards induced by the national and international context, is due to the desire of the new authorities in charge of the sector to organize the biennial in optimal conditions,” assure the authorities. For several days, social networks and the Senegalese press had reported rumors of postponement, attributed to the lack of funding allocated for the transport of works and accommodation for artists. According to RFI, “The last two payments which were to be made by the State were not honored. Of the budget of 1.5 billion FCFA planned by the State (around 2 million euros), less than a third is currently available, according to a member of the organizing committee.

The Dakar Biennale, created in 1992, is today the third Biennale in the world, according to its organizers. The 2024 edition, under the artistic direction of Salimata Diop, art critic and exhibition curator, will have the general theme “The wake”, “awakening, the wake”. The two countries in the spotlight are the United States and Cape Verde.

This event, which brings together several hundred artists and arts professionals for a month, and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Senegalese capital, had already been postponed to 2020 due to the Covid epidemic.
