The boss of the Italian Football League met the promoter of the Super League on Wednesday and reiterated his opposition to his plan for a closed European league, the Lega Serie A said in a press release. “As announced to all Serie A clubs during our general meeting last Friday, during the day on Wednesday a meeting took place between our general director Luigi De Siervo and Bernd Reichart, the CEO of the company A22”, the organization which wishes to launch the Super League, explained the body in a press release.
“The meeting, organized at the request of A22, allowed everyone to have a moment to develop their point of view on the future of European competitions,” the League continues in its text. “We have the same position as all the other major leagues in European football,” said Luis De Servio, quoted in the press release. During this meeting, I reiterated our opposition to the project, in accordance with the various decisions on the subject in 2019, 2021 and 2023.”
Launched in 2021 by twelve clubs, including Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and three Italian clubs (Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus), the first version of the Super League project was quickly buried due to opposition from supporters of the English clubs in particular and threats from UEFA and Fifa. The project was relaunched at the end of 2023 and the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, recently assured that it could “start as early as next season”.
