Football: Nagelsmann to succeed Hansi Flick as Germany coach

The German daily Bild said this on Tuesday on its website. Less than nine months before Euro 2024 at home, Julian Nagelsmann will become Germany's new coach.

When contacted, the German federation (DFB) did not wish to comment on the Bild article. According to information from the tabloid, the details of the contract have yet to be finalized. Nagelsmann's monthly salary would be around 400,000 euros. According to Bild, his contract would run until Euro 2024.

According to information from SID, a German sports press agency subsidiary of AFP, discussions took place on Tuesday between Nagelsmann and the DFB but an agreement on a contract has not yet been reached.

At just 36 years old, Julian Nagelsmann is preparing to bounce back at the bedside of a Nationalmannschaft in crisis, which dismissed a coach for the first time in its history, removing Hansi Flick from his post on September 10, the day after the rout at home against Japan (4-1) after a series of poor performances.

The name of Nagelsmann as a potential successor to Flick quickly circulated in the German press, alongside former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, or former Turkey coach Stefan Kuntz, European champion with the German hopes in 2017 and 2021.

“Of course he can do it. He’s an incredible coach,” Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said on Thursday.

For the honorary president of Bayern Uli Hoeness, Nagelsmann has the qualities for the position, but according to him "the DFB could appeal to the Emperor of China, even for him it would be difficult", he slipped into an interview with the major Munich daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, Saturday.

Germany hosts the European Championship next summer, with an opening match on June 14 at the Allianz Arena in Munich and a final in Berlin on July 14, and Nagelsmann will be on a mission to save the Euro at residence.

Nagelsmann arrived in the summer of 2021 to succeed Hansi Flick on the Bayern Munich bench, and was dismissed at the end of March 2023 by the management of the Munich club, while he was still involved in three different competitions (championship, cup and Champions League).

With Bayern, Nagelsmann won the 2021/22 German championship but was eliminated from the Champions League by Spaniards Villarreal in the quarter-finals. Since his sidelining and the arrival of Tuchel, Nagelsmann was still under contract with Bayern until June 2026.
