The Kings League, a 7-a-side football competition imagined by former Spanish defender Gerard Piqué, will take on a new dimension this summer. After its championship launched last year and its astonishing success, with a final in front of more than 92,000 people at the Camp Nou, the Kings League will organize its first World Cup. 32 teams will be invited to Mexico from May 26 to June 9, 2024.
Of the 32 participating teams, ten will come from the Spanish league and ten others from the South American league. The remaining twelve teams will be expected to “represent the entire world.” France has not been forgotten: the streamer AmineMaTue (2.5 million subscribers on Twitch) will be the “president” of the Blues, as he announced in a video with Piqué and Neymar this Tuesday.
It is up to AmineMaTue to recruit a coach and players to make the colors of France shine. Neymar, former PSG star, will also be president of a team, FURIA. Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas will also be one of the big names at this World Cup. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been named president of the competition and will present the trophy to the winner on June 9.
Pique, a former player for Barça and the Spanish selection, brought about the Kings League to “revolutionize traditional sport” and make football more “entertaining”. The rules differ, with for example the existence of a bonus per match for each team, granting them the choice of a free penalty, or the temporary exclusion of an opposing player.
