Endurance: Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne starts at Peugeot in 2024

Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne will participate in the 2024 season of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) as a starting driver for the Peugeot TotalEnergies team, the Stellantis Motorsport group announced on Thursday.

Vandoorne, until now a reserve driver, will be at the wheel of the Peugeot 9X8 hypercar, which he already knows after replacing the injured Nico Müller at the 6 Hours of Fuji on September 10.

Peugeot is banking on it to “compete for victory against competitors in the Hypercar category”, in which ten manufacturers will compete next season, the team said in a press release.

“Having the opportunity to be able to fight in the general classification and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans is fantastic because I think it is a dream for many drivers,” rejoiced the 31-year-old Belgian, quoted in the press release.

The 2024 season begins on March 2 in Qatar with a race of 1,812 km, a distance which refers to the date of the national holiday in the emirate, December 18.

Also involved in Formula E with DS Penske, another team in the Stellantis group, Vandoorne is also a reserve on certain Formula 1 Grands Prix for Aston Martin.

The native of Kortrijk was crowned 2022 world champion in Formula E with Mercedes, after a second place in 2020.

Champion in the GP2 category (now Formula 2) in 2015, he then joined the McLaren Formula 1 team. But at the time it was experiencing a slump and Vandoorne was only able to do better than two 16th places in the world championship in 2017 and 2018.
