Franz Beckenbauer is no more. The former German star died on Sunday at the age of 78. News that moved Michel Platini. “I took a blow to the head because it was the Kaiser, and Franz I spent many, many years with him. First I saw him play when I was young against Cruyff or Pelé at the 1970 World Cup. He was Mr. Football in Germany. He made German football and the history of German football,” he remembers on RMC.
“I think he was a creator, an organizer but behind it. He was the first player to make 40-yard passes from behind. He knew how to score goals, he created the offensive defender,” continued Platini. He was always in the creation of football and he was the one who managed that. Technically he was above it. He started in midfield, scored some great goals in 1970 and then moved to the back. And from behind he created football. He was at the start of the creation of attacks in German football.

“Afterwards I got to know him through my positions through the associations where I was and where he was. We've come a long way together. Not only was he a great player but he was also classy, kind, smiling and charming. He was an exceptional person and I was proud to be his friend,” he concluded.
