Bundesliga: Tuchel stays and Rummenigge returns to Bayern, announces President Hainer

Thomas Tuchel will be the coach of Bayern Munich next season, assured club president Herbert Hainer during a press conference on Sunday, also announcing the return of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the management of the club. “We are absolutely convinced by Thomas Tuchel. He is one of the best coaches in Europe, he has demonstrated it in his various positions”, explained Herbert Hainer, assuring that there was “no thought” towards a separation or a departure from Thomas Tuchel, arrived in Bavaria at the end of March.

After the victory in Cologne (2-1) on Saturday afternoon and the eleventh consecutive title of German champion, Thomas Tuchel explained: "At first, I am there." This statement was interpreted in some German media as a possible departure before the end of his contract in the summer of 2025.

Just crowned German champion for the 33rd time in its history, Bayern Munich had ended the functions of sporting director of Hasan Salihamidzic and chairman of the management board of Oliver Kahn. The decision to separate from these two “historic” club members was made on Thursday after discussions led by Herbert Hainer and honorary president Uli Hoeness. If Salihamidzic accepted the situation, the exchange was “very emotional” with Kahn, affirms Herbert Hainer.

"We couldn't part ways amicably. We therefore assembled an exceptional supervisory board on Friday and decided to separate ourselves from Oliver Kahn and that he could not go to Cologne, ”said Hainer. This choice was announced to Thomas Tuchel on Friday. "He was understanding, we had a very, very good discussion," added the Bayern president.

For a new start in the management of the club, Herbert Hainer explained that the former chairman of the management board from 2002 to 2021, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who had given up his place to Kahn in the summer of 2021, would join the supervisory board of the club, at the next meeting on Tuesday. Hainer praised the “merits” of Rummenigge, “highly appreciated on the European scene”. The former Bayern vice-president (1991-2002) is a member of the UEFA executive committee, as a representative of the European Club Association (ECA).

One of the first tasks of the Bayern supervisory board will be to find a successor to Hasan Salihamidzic as sporting director, while the post of chairman of the management board has been awarded to Jan-Christian Dreesen, until then vice-president of the Board in charge of finance, for a period of two years.
