Basketball: Kenny Atkinson and Frédéric Sarre join the staff of the France team

After the failed World Cup last September, the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) indicated its intention to change things at the staff level. In a press conference given on October 10, Laurent Foirest, assistant since 2017, was thanked. “It is not a question of quality but a concern for complementarity”, indicated the General Manager of the Blues, Boris Diaw, leaving the door open to a foreign technician or one who has “experience abroad” to support Pascal Donnadieu, Ruddy Nelhomme and Bryan George. “We have quite similar profiles, with quite similar experience and a quite similar vision,” explained the former captain of the France team.

In the end, the choice of the FFBB fell on an American and Francophile coach, Kenny Atkinson, former player of the French championship and assistant to Michel Gomez in Paris between 2004 and 2006. “With multiple experiences in France, in Europe and in the NBA, Kenny Atkinson met the search criteria for the technical staff. He will bring real added value to the team of technicians already in place,” we specify about the man who currently serves as assistant to Steve Kerr on the Warriors staff. He previously served as the head coach of Brooklyn (2016-2019). His name had been in the pipeline for a while to join the French staff.

That's not all. Former coach of Pau-Lacq-Orthez, Bourg-en-Bresse, Gravelines-Dunkerque, Strasbourg and Limoges, Frédéric Sarre becomes the new Deputy General Manager alongside Diaw. “Sports Director since 2014, then Deputy General Manager since 2021, Yann Barbitch, expressed the wish to devote more time to other professional projects. By mutual agreement with the federation, it was decided to put an end to this collaboration,” specifies the FFBB. Sarre has been free since the end of his mission as sporting director of JL Bourg earlier this year, having retired from coaching in 2015. Sarre will bring all his experience from the next February window.
