Rachid Meziane, who manages Villeneuve-d'Ascq, finalist on Sunday in the women's Euroleague of basketball, was named coach of the year of the competition on Saturday, during a ceremony held in Mersin on the occasion of the Final Four on the Turkish coast. The French technician, also coach of Belgium, brought down a regular from the last four, Prague (84-78) the day before in the half.
“I wouldn’t have imagined it would be possible one day. I have the impression that my life is a dream and I don’t want to wake up,” reacted the man who led the “Belgian Cats” to the roof of Europe last year. “If I’m coach of the year, it’s because you’re team of the year. I love you,” he said, addressing his “crazy players” from Villeneuve-d’Ascq.
On the floor side, Belgian international Emma Meesseman, pivot of the other finalist Fenerbahçe, was elected MVP of the regular season for the second year in a row.
