2034 World Cup: Saudi Arabia formalizes its candidacy

Saudi Arabia officially launched its campaign on Friday to host the 2034 World Cup, of which it is in any case the only candidate. The Saudi Football Federation (SAFF) introduced the slogan “Growing. Together.” (Grow. Together.) and the logo of its candidacy, representing intertwined multicolored ribbons drawing the numbers 3 and 4 and decorated with “football images and cultural symbols”, explained the SAFF in a press release.

This candidacy “is only made possible by the rapid transformation of the country”, specifies the president of the Federation Yasser Al Misehal. It is part of Saudi Arabia's policy of influence through sport, which is part of the vast “Vision 2030” project led by Mohammed Ben Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is the only candidate to host the World Cup in 2034 since the Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay-Chile quartet gave up. The first three countries will each host a match in the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Australia also gave up on October 31 its candidacy for 2034. The officialization of the organizing country of the 2034 World Cup must take place at the end of 2024.
