Tenants' association criticizes planned one-off payment for gas customers

The tenants' association sees tenants at a disadvantage in the planned one-off payment for gas and district heating customers. In addition, the regulations are far too complicated, said the President of the German Tenants' Association, Lukas Siebenkotten. Criticism also came from the house owners' association

SPD faction deputy Matthias Miersch said: "The traffic light coalition ensures that Germany gets through the winter safely and that energy remains affordable." The relief must be taxed for very large incomes. “This is how we ensure a socially just balance.” It is about social cohesion as part of an overall package.

The emergency aid for gas and district heating customers, worth billions, is intended as a bridging measure until the gas price brake takes effect. This should take effect from March, but the federal government is examining retrospective relief as of February 1st.

Siebenkotten said emergency aid for gas and district heating customers was extremely important. “But tenants benefit from this far too late and are disadvantaged by the law. Most tenants are supplied with natural gas and district heating, the December relief from 2022 will only take effect here in the course of 2023 as part of the tenants’ utility bills.”

The regulations are also much too complicated and hardly transparent, especially for tenants. "In this way, only a fraction of the tenants find out how high their individual relief contribution from the federal government actually is."

The President of House

Warnecke further said that in order to close a relief gap, the gas price brake should be brought forward to January. Siebenkotten said that the gas price brake should be brought forward with an immediate adjustment of the advance payments. "If that is not feasible, gas and district heating customers must be relieved of a one-off payment in January and February."
