"More urgent than ever" - Federal government presents strategy against anti-Semitism

The federal cabinet passed a "national strategy against anti-Semitism and for Jewish life" on Wednesday. The aim of the strategy is to make the life of Jews visible in all its facets and to counteract hatred of Jews, explained the Federal Government's Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Felix Klein. In view of the increase in the number of anti-Semitic crimes in recent years, such a strategy is "more urgent than ever".

In 2021, the police registered 3,027 anti-Semitic crimes nationwide. The vast majority of them were motivated by right-wing extremists. The strategy developed by Klein aims to address five fields of action in order to counteract anti-Semitism in politics, institutions and civil society, including education, the investigation and prosecution of anti-Jewish crimes and the collection of data and research on the manifestations of anti-Semitism.

Another field of action is dedicated to the culture of remembrance. The strategy calls for new forms of conveying National Socialism because fewer and fewer eyewitnesses are able to report on their experiences. The foreword to the strategy emphasizes the importance of the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews for how Germany deals with anti-Semitism today. "Responsibility for the Shoah establishes the German relationship to Judaism and to Israel as a place of refuge for Jewish people from all over the world," it says.

The approximately 50-page paper also defines three so-called cross-sectional dimensions that should be taken into account in the fight against anti-Semitism: the perspective of those affected, digitization, for example when conveying history, and the formation of sustainable structures. The strategy formulates goals of the federal government, but should also be a guide for other actors such as schools, cultural institutions or sports clubs.
