A large majority of Germans believe that radical protests are damaging to climate protection concerns

According to a survey, a large majority of Germans think that climate protests such as road blockades are wrong. 86 percent of those surveyed also found that the actions of the activists from the “Last Generation” group are damaging the issue of climate protection, as a representative survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Tuesday) revealed. Only seven percent of Germans believe that the actions of the activists are beneficial for climate protection, another seven percent were undecided.

Of the approximately 5,000 respondents, 81 percent thought the actions of the activists were wrong, only 14 percent thought the protest was right, as the survey conducted online at the beginning of November showed. There was still the most approval among the voters of the Greens (40 percent) and the Left (34 percent). Rejection was 97 percent among CDU/CSU voters.

The group "Last Generation" has blocked roads again and again. There was strong criticism when a special vehicle from the Berlin fire brigade got stuck in a traffic jam during a blockade on October 31. The vehicle was intended to help rescue a critically injured cyclist. Numerous politicians are calling for tougher action against the blockers. Despite the criticism of the actions, the group "Last Generation" wants to continue their protest actions.

According to Civey, for the question "How do you rate the climate protests (e.g. road blockades) of the 'Last Generation' group?" until November 7th, 2022, the answers of 5003 citizens selected representative of the population were taken into account. Answer options were: definitely right, right, somewhat wrong, definitely wrong, undecided.

According to Civey, in the period from 3.11. until 6.11.2022 the answers of 5006 respondents were taken into account. Answer options were: definitely harm, rather harm, definitely use, rather use, undecided.

The statistical error tolerance was therefore 2.5 percent in each case. The opinion research institute states that it only takes the votes of registered and verified Internet users into account for its representative surveys.
