Sánchez condemns Iran's attack on Israel and calls for "containment" to avoid an escalation

Sánchez has called for "responsibility and restraint" in the response of all international leaders, to avoid "an escalation" in violence "at all costs."

"After a long and anguishing night in which the scale of the attack perpetrated by Iran has been confirmed, the Government of Spain condemns it, as it has condemned and will always condemn all forms of violence that threaten the safety and well-being of innocent civilians" , he stated in a statement published on the social network X.

"The response of all international leaders demands responsibility and restraint," Sánchez added in his second message about this attack, after another sent at midnight, nine hours earlier.

The President of the Government added: "We must learn from history and find a way to resolve conflicts through diplomatic means, avoiding at all costs an even greater escalation."

A few minutes later, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, indicated a similar condemnation of the attacks, "which constitute a very serious step towards regional escalation."

"Spain remains committed to regional stability and peace," said Albares, who like Sánchez, has called for containment: "Containment is essential."

The Foreign Minister added that "the Spanish colony is doing well" and that the embassies in the region remain "operational."

Last night, the president stressed after learning of the events that he would avoid "at all costs" a regional scale of the conflict marked by Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

"We follow the events in the Middle East with utmost concern. A regional escalation must be avoided at all costs," he said.

"We are in permanent contact with the embassies in the region, which remain active, to serve the Spaniards in the area."

Albares, who expressed himself "deeply concerned about the situation in the Middle East," expressed himself in similar terms.

The President of the Government has assumed the role of bridge between Europe and the Middle East that he wants to capture in the series of trips he has made in recent weeks: the last of them last Friday, within the framework of a tour that began in Norway , continued in Ireland and will continue next week in Slovenia and Belgium.

Talks that will include concern about an escalation of war in the region after the Iranian attack on Israel.

Its objective is to add as many countries as possible to the recognition of Palestine, to try to make it effective in a coordinated manner and thereby achieve a call effect that encourages some undecided partners to act in the same way.

He believes this attitude is the way to try to achieve a definitive solution to the Middle East conflict, which he is convinced will only be possible when an agreement is reached for the coexistence of two states, Israel and Palestine, that live together in peace and security.

The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has also condemned "the indiscriminate attack" by Iran against Israel. "We condemn the Iranian regime's indiscriminate attack against Israel. Iran and its militias in the region seriously threaten the stability of the Middle East," he said in a message published on X.

According to Feijóo, "Spain must work with its allies, without hesitation, to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation."
