“We must be responsible”: Emmanuel Macron assumes “making choices” to reduce the deficit

“We must be responsible in terms of public finances.” From Brussels, where he is attending an international summit on nuclear power this Thursday, March 21, Emmanuel Macron defended the reforms carried out to reduce the public deficit, which should be “greater than 5%” of GDP for 2023. “I think that we have to make choices, assumed the President of the Republic. This is why we reformed pensions, why we reformed unemployment insurance.”

If these two reforms are far from having convinced public opinion - that on pensions having notably led to massive mobilizations in 2023 before being adopted despite everything - the Head of State claimed his "choice to invest in the future, on our public services and on the major transitions. “We must win the battle of reindustrialization, full employment and win the battle of transitions,” he insisted.

In the morning, the government confirmed that the deficit would largely exceed 4.9% of GDP for 2023 as initially planned, and is now counting on 5.6%. Beyond the reforms, the executive urgently made 10 billion budget cuts for 2024, and launched a consultation with parliamentarians to find 20 billion additional savings in 2025.
