San Sebastian Festival: consecration of Jaione Camborda

With her latest film O corno, Spanish director Jaione Camborda won the “Concha de Oro” (the golden shell) on Saturday, the most prestigious prize at the San Sebastian festival in the Basque Country, chaired this year by Claire Denis .

The director's second feature film, O corno tells the story of a shellfish harvester who lives in a coastal town in Galicia in the 1970s and helps women give birth, but also to terminate their pregnancies. “It’s very special for me to receive this award here, in this city that saw me grow up,” reacted the director.

The film Puan by Argentinians Maria Alché and Benjamin Naishtat won the prizes for best screenplay and best actor, for Argentinian actor Marcelo Subiotto, tied with Japanese Tatsuya Fuji. The Silver Shell for best director went to Taiwanese Tzu-Hui Peng and Ping-Wen Wang, for Chun Xing.

Among the stars who came to San Sebastian were Juliette Binoche, Jessica Chastain and Mads Mikkelsen. The festival also paid tribute to Spanish actor Javier Bardem. The Boy and the Heron, the latest animated film by famous Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, was presented for the first time in Europe at the opening. The film features a boy named Mahito who leaves Tokyo with his father and settles in the countryside after the tragic death of his mother. There he meets a gray heron who takes him into a fantastic universe where he gradually discovers the mystery of his mother's death and his family history.
