Cannes Film Festival 2024: Rodrigo Sorogoyen, president of the Critics’ Week jury

Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen will serve as president of the jury for the 63rd Critics' Week, one of the parallel selections at the Cannes Film Festival, the organizers announced on Friday. He succeeds the journalist, editor, screenwriter, Audrey Diwan.

At 42, the director is one of the figures of the revival of Spanish cinema. He has stood out in recent years for his black cinema, from Que dios nos Perdone to El Reino, which earned him the Goya for best director, the Spanish equivalent of the Césars, in 2019.

A wider French audience discovered him with his latest film, As Bestas, a thriller shot in Galicia which starred two French actors, Denis Ménochet and Marina Foïs. It then won the prize for best foreign film during the 48th edition of the César du cinéma ceremony at the Olympia in Paris on February 24, 2023.

In a video published on the social network For Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Critics’ Week “essentially supports cinema, new ways of telling stories and new voices. Without them there would be no new cinema.”

Founded in 1962, Critics' Week is one of the main parallel selections at the Cannes Film Festival, dedicated to the discovery of new talents and programming first or second films. This selection notably saw big names in independent cinema and auteur cinema such as Ken Loach move to Alejandro González Iñárritu, Rebecca Zlotowski or even Justine Triet. The list of 11 feature films selected this year must be revealed on April 15.

As for the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, the list of films for this 77th edition must be revealed on Thursday April 11. The competition jury will be chaired by the director of Barbie, Greta Gerwig, and that of the Un Certain Regard section by Quebecer Xavier Dolan.
