At the BNF, two highlights to fight against anti-Semitism

The National Library of France is organizing a free cycle dedicated to the fight against anti-Semitism in two stages. Monday January 22, the institution invites the historian and member of the French Academy Pascal Ory to return to his essay On Hatred of the Jew. Published in 2021, the work addresses the history of anti-Semitism, analyzing “the different forms of Judeophobia since the advent of Christianity, from medieval anti-Judaism to contemporary anti-Zionism through 19th century anti-Semitism” , specifies a press release from the BnF.

The conference will be followed by the screening of the film The Old Man and the Child by Claude Berri, released in 1967, with Michel Simon in the role of an anti-Semitic Pétainist who takes a liking to a Jewish child taking refuge with him. The event will take place on the François-Mitterrand site, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris.

On January 29, the actor Denis Podalydès was invited for a reading of the text by Émile Zola, J'accuse...!, an open letter addressed to the President of the Republic Félix Faure published in L'Aurore on January 13, 1898. The journalist and writer exposes the machination which led in December 1894 to the conviction of Alfred Dreyfus in a espionage case. Zola also reveals the real traitor, Commander Esterhazy - who had just been acquitted a few days earlier by the First War Council of Paris. It was precisely this acquittal that pushed him to take up his pen.

Also read: February 23, 1898 Zola was condemned for his article “J’accuse...!”

“An implacable indictment against anti-Semitism which will mark a turning point in the Dreyfus affair, this letter is at the same time a lesson in writing, a major historical event and a press phenomenon: more than 200,000 copies of L'Aurore are distributed from the first hours of publication,” underlines the Parisian institution. The reading will end with a conference given by the historian Philippe Oriol, specialist in the Dreyfus affair. This second part will take place in the Oval Room of the Richelieu site in the 2nd arrondissement, where the manuscript of the letter, preserved by the BNF, will be presented, from January 20 to May 19, 2024.
