USA win explosive group final against Iran

For the first time since 1998, the Iranian national team and the United States faced each other again at a soccer World Cup. The game was already politically charged in the last duel in France, and the 2-1 win in Lyon is still celebrated today by officials of the Islamic Republic as a triumph over their arch-enemy and the greatest success in national football history.

24 years later, the Americans cheered at the end. Christian Pulisic (38th) decided the game of the third match day in Group B for the strong defensive US boys, who went unbeaten 1-0 (1-0) and earned second place in the group. Iran, who tried in vain to equalize in the closing stages, was left with the thankless third place.

In the parallel game, England secured victory in their group with a 3-0 (0-0) win over Wales. Marcus Rashford (50', 68') and Phil Foden (51') scored for Gareth Southgate's side, who now meet Senegal in the round of 16. The US has to deal with the Netherlands.

More to come.
