The World Cup will take place without Marco Reus

Marco Reus will not take part in the World Cup. National coach Hansi Flick, who will announce his squad on Thursday afternoon, will do without the Borussia Dortmund captain, who has been injured again. This is reported by “Bild” and Sky in unison.

Reus had always been in the Dortmund starting XI for the first six match days of this Bundesliga season, but then injured himself in the derby against Schalke 04. Since the ankle ligament tear, the 33-year-old has only made two substitutions. One of them this Saturday in the 3-0 win against Bochum 20 minutes before the end of the game.

The comeback ended painfully, however, and Reus complained again about problems in the ankle. Reus wasn't able to train this week and wasn't even in the squad on Tuesday at 0:2 in Wolfsburg. The pain was too great.

BVB trainer Edin Terzic said after the game in Wolfsburg that he “of course” had the feeling that Reus really wanted to go to the World Cup, which starts on November 20: “We see how hard he works, how he works for his comeback worked and toiled hard. Unfortunately, he was thrown back again and again and the pain kept getting worse.”

The offensive player missed another big tournament and maybe the last chance for a title with the national team. Due to injury, Reus was unable to take part in the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 European Championship.

Reus then voluntarily gave up the EM last summer. After many injuries, his body would need a break, he explained. One of the most talented German footballers of his time only took part in the 2012 European Championships (mostly substitute players at the time) and the unspeakable 2018 World Cup, which ended with being eliminated in the preliminary round.

The tension before the squad announcement is increasing. The decisive personnel questions are, for example, after a nomination of the international newcomers Youssoufa Moukoko (17) and Niclas Füllkrug (29) in attack after the loss of Leipzig's Timo Werner. It is also still unclear how Flick will decide on a possible DFB comeback for the 2014 world champions Mario Götze and Mats Hummels. The current top form speaks in sporting terms in particular for a World Cup comeback by Frankfurter Götze, who scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina in Rio in 2014.
