"Risk of a blackout" - Kubicki demands continued operation of the nuclear power plants

According to the traffic light compromise, the German nuclear power era should end in mid-April. Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki (FDP), however, advocates not shutting down the last nuclear power plants in Germany as planned in mid-April, but rather continuing to operate them.

"We were very lucky that we had the nuclear power plants over the winter to stabilize our network and electricity consumption," said the FDP deputy to the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" and the "RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland" (RND). However, one would be well advised if this were still the case next winter.

Kubicki advised the SPD and the Greens to consider "whether they want to expose Germany to the risk of a blackout." "The way I assess my coalition partners, it's a call into a forest and nothing echoes back," said the 71-year-old.

As early as December, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) rejected calls from the FDP for the continued operation of nuclear power plants in Germany beyond mid-April. From his point of view, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had "finally" decided that the nuclear power plants would be used this winter and not beyond.

Actually, the remaining nuclear power plants should have gone offline on December 31st. Because of the energy crisis as a result of the Ukraine war, its duration was extended to April 15.
