Pope Francis suffers from a respiratory infection – and stays in the hospital for a few days

Pope Francis is in the hospital with a respiratory infection and will stay there for a few days. This was announced by the spokesman for the Holy See, Matteo Bruni, on Wednesday evening. According to Bruni, the 86-year-old has complained of breathing problems in the past few days. The infection was then found during tests in the hospital. It is not a corona infection, Bruni said.

It remains unclear when Francis will return to the Vatican – where the Easter celebrations will be next week. The Holy Father was touched by the many messages he received and thanks for the prayers, the Vatican statement said.

The head of the Catholic Church was taken to Rome's Gemelli University Hospital in the afternoon. At first it was said that these were check-ups planned in advance, appointments for the following day had been canceled as a precaution.

However, Italian media had also reported that Francis had been taken to the clinic by ambulance with breathing difficulties and heart problems. During his weekly audience on Wednesday morning, the head of the Catholic Church appeared in a good mood and smiled at the faithful from his "Papamobile". However, as his staff helped him get into the vehicle, he could be seen grimacing in pain.

Because of the concern of heart disease, among other things, computed tomography and tests for oxygen saturation of the blood were carried out, according to media reports. However, there were no conspicuous findings, reported Ansa and Adnkronos, referring to informed people in the healthcare system. Already in the afternoon caregivers and security guards were informed that the pope would have to stay in the hospital for at least one night.

In July 2021, the Pope had an operation on his intestines at the Gemelli Hospital. In addition, Francis has been struggling with knee pain for a long time. The 86-year-old has been using a cane or a wheelchair for months.

The physical ailments of the pope had fueled speculation that the head of the church might resign. At the end of July last year, he announced that he wanted to travel less because of his health problems. He must "save his powers a bit" or "otherwise think about the possibility of stepping aside." In February of this year, however, he declared that resigning was "not on my plan at the moment".
