Elon Musk gives up his phone number for X

Elon Musk never stops talking about him. After the recent addition of messaging features and audio and video calls to the social network X (formerly Twitter), the American entrepreneur has simply decided to no longer use his mobile phone number, in favor of the social network. A decision announced in a tweet on February 9.

“In a few months I will suspend my phone number and only use Twitter for messages and audio/video calls,” he posted on X.

By promoting his company's new tools, Elon Musk is supporting his project to make the social network an "everything app", like WeChat, its Chinese equivalent. WeChat brings together 1.3 billion users, 2/3 of which are located in China. More than a simple social network, the platform notably allows money exchanges with WeChat Pay, its mobile payment service.

If calls and messages can only be made by subscribers of the paid version of X for the moment, they can be received by all its users. Elon Musk thus compares X to a “World Directory”. When he bought Twitter in October 2022, he quickly expressed his desire to expand the possibilities of the application. And a year later at the Vivatech show, he announced the “potential to make it something more important than PayPal”, a famous online payment service that Musk himself co-founded.
