Axel Milberg resigns as commissioner at the Kiel "Tatort".

After around 20 years, Axel Milberg ends his career as Commissioner Klaus Borowski in the Kiel edition of the ARD crime series "Tatort". The actor and the Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR) announced this together on Wednesday in Hamburg. The long phase of saying goodbye is perhaps comforting for the fans: Milberg will be seen in new episodes as a "crime scene" commissioner until 2025.

Milberg, who in his role as the edgy and at times unapproachably grim investigator Borowski has been part of the crime scene detectives since 2003, will celebrate his 20th anniversary in the Sunday crime series in the fall. The 66-year-old, who was born in Kiel, initially determined this together with fellow actress Sibel Kekilli, and later alongside actress Almila Bagriacik.

"As nice as it was to focus on the character 'Borowski', after 21 years the market is changing and so am I," said Milberg on Wednesday about his upcoming departure from "Tatort". "I have therefore asked the management of the NDR not to extend our contract again and I am looking forward to the new thing - now I am looking ahead."

NDR Director General Joachim Knuth praised Milberg as an "exceptional actor whose art of transformation and playfulness in the 'Tatort' I will miss very much". With his departure, an "era" is coming to an end. However, he is pleased that the actor "remains in new projects" with his station.

With a view to Milberg's successor, NDR also announced that his series companion Bagriacik, who embodies Borowski's assistant Mila Sahin in the series, will in future be "at the center of a new investigative team in Kiel". The broadcaster said that whoever is still part of the new Kiel team will be announced at a later date.

Most recently, the Kiel team shot at the Metal Festival in Wacken. The episode is called "Tatort: Borowski and the innocent child from Wacken" and the festival will be the finale of the Sunday crime thriller. It is about a dead baby found in a parking lot near Kiel and the search for the mother. An entry ribbon for the heavy metal festival in Wacken finally leads Klaus Borowski (Milberg) and Mila Sahin (Bagriacik) to the popular festival location. The case is scheduled to air later this year.
