The first explosion happened in a church in the north of the capital Colombo. A second explosion took place in a church in Negombo, north of Colombo. In the churches lived faithful to the easter celebration. The three affected hotels are according to the Sri Lankan newspaper Lankadeepa the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo, the Shangri-La Hotel and the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.
