Top 14/Pro D2: return to a thriving economy

The Covid crisis is definitely over. The National Rugby League has indeed recorded increasing financial results for the 2022/2023 season. “Cumulative operating income increased by 6% to reach 544 million euros, the highest historical level,” welcomes the League in its press release. Figures which “testify to the vitality of the clubs and the attractiveness of the Top 14 and Pro D2 championships.”

In detail, this increase is driven “mainly by double-digit growth in ticketing revenue and partnerships/hospitality accompanied by the increase in payments from the LNR”. Other excellent news: “average club turnover has never been higher”. Respectively €28.4 million in Top 14 and €9.2 million in Pro D2.

However, the consolidated operating result stands at -€73 million. “A net loss reduced to -€44 million thanks to the support of the associates.” The reasons are multiple, including “the impact of inflation on operational costs, the end of accounting for state aid linked to Covid, and the clubs’ ambitious and committed investment strategies.” The players' salaries are, for their part, almost stable.
