New York Marathon: Ethiopian Tamirat Tola wins and breaks a new record

Ethiopian Tamirat Tola won the New York marathon on Sunday in 2 hours 4 minutes and 58 seconds, a new American race record. Starting with the best time of the entrants after the withdrawals of the Kenyan favorites Evans Chebet and Geoffrey Kamworor, he took the lead to complete the second part of the race alone in the lead.

He finished ahead of the Kenyan Albert Korir (1 minute and 59 sec), winner in New York in 2021, and the Ethiopian Shura Kitata (2 min 13 sec). Tola also beats the record for the most famous marathon in the world, which had stood since 2011.

Tamirat Tola, world distance champion in Eugene in 2022, was unable to defend his title in Budapest this summer, forced to withdraw due to stomach problems.
