Bundesliga: Leverkusen dominates Wolfsburg and heads towards the title

Once again in numerical superiority for more than an hour, Bayer Leverkusen continued its impressive flawless performance this season, dominating Sunday evening Wolfsburg (2-0) in its BayArena, taking another step towards a first title of champion.

Nine days before the end of the 2023/24 financial year, Bayer Leverkusen is ten points ahead of Bayern Munich, who are regaining some color after a catastrophic month of February which made them lose contact with the leader (four points out of twelve possible when Leverkusen took the maximum).

In this final sprint, Xabi Alonso's men thus have three jokers to seek a first German championship title, and put an end to eleven consecutive seasons of Bavarian hegemony over German football.

And even if Xabi Alonso still affirmed last week that this situation in the standings and the ten points lead meant nothing at this time of the season, never in the history of the Bundesliga has a club managed to fill in such a gap in nine days.

After its draw (2-2) snatched at the last minute in Baku on Thursday evening on the Qarabagh lawn in the round of 16 first leg of the Europa League, and its victory on Sunday during the 25th day of the Bundesliga, Leverkusen still remains undefeated in the 36 matches played this season (all competitions combined), record series in progress for a German club.

In the last three matches of the Werkself (nickname of the team of the club founded by the chemist Bayer in 1904), their opponents made their task easier with red cards. Mainz took one in the 80th minute, Cologne in the 14th minute.

On Sunday, Wolfsburg played outnumbered from the 28th minute, with the exclusion of Moritz Jenz, who received a second yellow card for a foul on Leverkusen's Czech center forward, Patrik Schick.

It took no less for Lukas Hradecky's teammates to sign a 21st victory this season in the Bundesliga, as many as Bayern in 34 matches during the 2022/23 coronation. Nigerian international Nathan Tella opened the scoring with a header in the 37th minute, cementing Leverkusen's domination.

Before this goal from Tella, Florian Wirtz had found the post of Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels (22nd minute).

In the second half, Leverkusen's defense was never worried and Xabi Alonso's team was content to manage its one-goal lead and save strength, with a view to the round of 16 second leg of the Europa League, scheduled for Thursday against Qarabagh at home.

Florian Wirtz hit the post again in the last five minutes, but this time to deceive Casteels (86th minute) and double the lead for Leverkusen.

The club on the outskirts of Cologne is still involved in three competitions between the championship, the Europa League and the German Cup and a semi-final to play against Fortuna Düsseldorf, residents of the second division.
