This Monday evening at the Roi-Baudoin stadium, the Belgium-Sweden match counting for the Euro 2024 qualifiers had to be stopped at half-time (with a score of 1-1). For security reasons following the attack in the center of Brussels, killing two people, the players and the public remained in the Brussels stadium for several minutes before a secure evacuation.
Belgian international Thomas Meunier did not experience this night of anxiety up close since a hamstring injury deprived him of the selection rally. From Dortmund where he has been playing since 2020, he however reacted to the tragic events of the evening on his X account. “And the worst is undoubtedly to come... Let us pray for the victims and the people badly influenced by erroneous teaching of a religion. May God help them find the right path,” he declared, not without concern.
After a night of searching, Brussels police arrested the suspect in the attack this Tuesday morning, according to the latest information. The assailant died from his injuries.
