The Office for the Protection of the Constitution has not yet classified the last generation as "extremist".

The President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, does not consider the climate protection movement "Last Generation" to be extremist.

"Currently, the Federal and State Office for the Protection of the Constitution does not see sufficient evidence to assess the Last Generation climate movement as extremist," Haldenwang told the editorial network Germany (RND).

This assessment is not changed by the fact that activists of the last generation sometimes acted criminally. At the same time, Haldenwang emphasized: "The Office for the Protection of the Constitution takes a close look every day at how the situation is developing."

Last week, the "Spiegel" reported that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is currently investigating whether it needs to monitor the climate protection activists of the last generation. The office had already created a corresponding test case more than half a year ago, it said.

Haldenwang said that he was "prohibited from speaking about test cases". However, the President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution pointed out in general and without reference to the last generation that a test case is a standardized procedure that must be initiated so that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution can even begin with an examination. This is not automatically associated with a qualitative assessment.

The group, which was founded at the end of 2021, blocked motorway access for the first time on January 24 last year. Thereafter, with interruptions, such blockades followed almost daily, as well as protests in museums, stadiums, at oil pipelines and airports.

Among other things, the activists are calling for a general move away from fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Many politicians had criticized the group's actions. For example, Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) called the group's actions "extremely dangerous".
